Traveling during the holidays can be exciting—but it can also throw your body out of balance. According to Ayurveda, the Vata dosha is especially sensitive to travel, often bringing dryness, restlessness, and digestive disturbances. Here’s how to stay grounded, comfortable, and vibrant while on the move:
1. Support Digestion with Triphala
Jet-setting can lead to irregular digestion and constipation, thanks to Vata’s influence. Taking ½ teaspoon of Triphala with warm water before bed helps keep your digestive system regular, ensuring you arrive refreshed and ready to go.
2. Stay Hydrated
Airplanes and long travel days are dehydrating. Drink plenty of purified water and soothing herbal teas to maintain hydration. Your skin, digestion, and energy levels will thank you.
3. Keep Healthy Snacks Handy
Airport and roadside food can be convenient—but are often full of preservatives. Pack fruits, nuts, or homemade snacks to stay nourished and energized. Drinking CCF tea (cumin, coriander, fennel) between meals can also aid digestion.
4. Oil Your Body to Calm Vata
Dryness and stiffness are common when traveling. Massage your feet and hands with sesame or your favorite oil, slip on cotton socks, and reapply as needed throughout your journey. For dry nasal passages, a few drops of nasya oil can work wonders.
5. Move Your Body
Even small movements help prevent stiffness and boost circulation. Walk through the airport, stretch on layovers, or do simple yoga poses to keep energy flowing.
6. Prioritize Rest
Jet lag and travel fatigue can take a toll. Ensure adequate sleep, and consider melatonin, essential oils, earplugs, or an eye pillow for a restful flight. After arrival, a restorative bath with Epsom salts can help reset your body.
7. Protect and Refresh Your Skin
If you’re traveling to sunny destinations, spritz organic rose water to cool the skin. Always wear natural SPF, and limit exposure during Pitta hours (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.), when the sun is strongest.
8. Ease Sinus Pressure
Flying often causes sinus discomfort. Simple Ayurvedic techniques can help:
Press gently under the eyes from inside to outside
Massage the base of the ears in slow circles
Apply revolving pressure to the temples with fingertips
Travel can be chaotic, but with these Ayurvedic practices, your journey can stay balanced, energized, and joyful. Pack wisely, move mindfully, and enjoy every step of your holiday adventure!
